Stuck In The Saddle

Like most of us I like to think of myself as cool, suave and sophisticated. Even though reality often reminds me of my true, awkward self, I like to forget those ugly reminders and keep the fantasy alive.

Some "reminders" are a little harder to shake off than others.

Yesterday I got up at the crack of dawn to go to Spin Class. I arrived a few minutes early and started in on all the warm-up rituals. I then slipped on my new biking shoes, mounted the stationary bike and clicked my shoes into the pedals.

An hour later I have turned into a sweet smelling, almost middle-aged man, gushing sweat from every pour. But I'm feeling good. I kept up with the instructor and I thought I looked pretty good in the mirror. New shoes, cool biking shirt and the latest hip shorts.

One-by-one class members begin to get off their bikes and head out.

After one last admiring glance of myself, I stop pedaling and twist my foot to unlock my shoe from the pedal.

It doesn't unlock.

I twist my foot the other way and try again.
Nothing. I try the other foot. I try again, again, again...

Nothing.
I start to panic.

(This was my tormentor)

By now the room is clearing out.

I keep at it, violently twisting and shaking my feet to try and dislodge them without anyone noticing.

Why aren't these shoes working? They worked the last time. What am I doing wrong?

I feel like such an idiot. I'm stuck, trapped on a stationary bike in the middle of the room.

I'm just about ready to reach down and unlace my shoes and just leave them permanently attached to the pedals when I finally get a little movement and work one shoe loose. Now with the extra leverage I get my other foot free. And without looking to see what was wrong I scamper out of there and head home.

Turns out I didn't tighten the clips on the bottom of the shoes. They had come loose and gotten tangled in the pedal mechanism.

You know when I was admiring myself in the mirror? I was pretty far away and the lights were turned down low. That's how you keep the fantasy alive!

If I can spin on a bike right next to you, you may have just given me the courage to try spinning. You are hilarious.
