The bedtime ritual includes reading stories. We have all heard the advice about how important it is to read to your kids, but to be honest after reading Green Eggs and Ham for the 5ooth time I start thinking about leaving them on their own and just hope it works out.
But I persevere.
Since I am stuck reading I have made it a quest of mine to be the perfect example of reading. I meticulously read each word, remaining true to the story and the authors intent, even if it's just Goodnight Moon.
One thing I haven't done in a long time is listen to Mindy read bedtime stories to the kids. But that all changed this week while we were in LA escaping the fires in San Diego. We got to share a room with the kids, so one night Mindy laid down on the bed and began to read stories, and with no where else to go I laid down to listen.
Big mistake.
I listened as she read and to my horror I noticed that Mindy was just using the Author' words as an outline of the story. As I followed along I realized that she skipped lines here and there and often times paraphrased entire paragraphs.
The repetition of Dr. Suess in Green Eggs and Ham became: "And he didn't want to eat it with a goat" instead of reading through each and every random location he refused. Sure the kids got the jist of the story - guy doesn't like green stuff then finally tries it. But what about the cadence and rhythm of Dr. Suess?
Sacrilege.
I couldn't take it. All those years of following the rules, reading every word!!
I had to leave the room.

Love it! Cute pic too.
Ha, Eldon! I was all prepared for this to be the sweet recounting of a loving mother reading to her darling children as you look on affectionately . . . You are so funny! And once again, you sound like me, always exactness. In fact, I've often read books to children who want to skip pages and I do everything I can to keep them in order. I have to say, I absolutely LOVED reading to your kids. At bedtime, especially, but any chance I could get. And you'll be happy to know, I read every word.
ChristineHonest Eldon: what Mindy does is called self preservation. It's the act of spending time with your kids that's important. Love you for being such a good dad!
Okay, I am still stuck on the fact that you do the dishes and put the kids to bed. In my 13 years of married life, that has never happened. I mean, NEVER. Jeff doesn't know we own a dishwasher. If he's feeling helpful, he thoughtfully places the dirty dishes in the sink - because that makes it so much easier to clean up. (I am being sarcastic) The bedtime routine consist of me packing the kids off to bed while he watches football. Okay, now that I have spouted off (can you tell you struck a cord) I just want to say that I am with you Mindy. I read to them because I love them, but I don't have a problem zipping through so I can have a little me time. PS. I still love my hubby. Those just aren't his strong points.
WOW!! I raise a good kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm with both of you: impatient as I was with the reading routine, I was committed to the literary blah blah blah. My favorites were The Snowy Day (short) and One Fish Two Fish (can "accidently" turn multiple pages without messing up the story line).
Can't wait til Brady's old enough to read to!
