Don't Touch My Pumpkin

Every year it's the same routine.

We gather as a family around the kitchen table. The kids are excited and talking a mile a minute as we spread newspaper over the table.

When the top is cut off the first pumpkin Ryan (2) squeals with joy. Garrett (4) thinks it's cool to squish his fingers in pumpkin guts. And the girls love the smell of pumpkin.

But then it happens. The selfish, petty behavior that can be so annoying to parents.

Let me describe the scene.

Each kid and myself has a pumpkin. The four kids are laughing and having a great time carving and Mindy is running from kid to kid helping and directing.

Me??

Once I get those knives in my hand I lose control. I become obsessed with carving my own work of art. In my creative state of mind I ignore the pleas of help from my kids. When they get too close I demand they back off. When they ask me to look at their masterpieces I grunt "yeah looks good" without really looking.

I'm the childish one. I think each year is going to be different but then I log onto Martha Stewart and print out a pattern and all hell breaks loose.

The price I pay for my Art!
