Wait Till Morning

This post has to start off with a picture sweet Ryan (2).

Now keep this image in your mind.

We all know what Ward parties can be like sometimes - a little chaotic. Most parents come in the doors and quickly lose track of their kids when they begin racing around the building in packs.

Well we were one of those parents the other night.

We new Ryan was around but we didn't know exactly where.
That's when someone noticed Ryan crying uncontrollably and brought him to us. They weren't sure what had happened just that he belonged to us.

As we looked him over he had a red cheek and blood in his mouth. Looked like a good fall but nothing serious. But he didn't calm down like usual. And soon we noticed he wasn't moving his left arm.

Great.

So we head home and try and give Ryan a bath, hoping that he will just shake it off. We didn't have time for a cast, nor did we want one with summer starting.
But we couldn't touch his arm without him screaming. It also didn't help that Garrett (4) thought he needed to grab the arm and watch Ryan's reaction.

Finally we call our neighbor, the Orthopedic Surgeon. After looking at him he diagnosed a possible broken bone in the elbow.

We decide if we can get him to sleep we would rather deal with it in the morning. This is what happens when it's the fourth child, they operate on Mom and Dad's time.

So we drug him up and he makes it until 5am when he must have rolled over.

At the Emergency Room at Children's hospital they take an xray. When the doctor comes back in she says hi and then grabs Ryan's arm and starts twisting it as Ryan screams out in pain!

And just like that she pops his elbow back in place and he is good as new. No broken bones, no cast.

On the way out the doctor mentions that Nursemaid's Elbow, which is what he had, is often more painful than breaking a bone.

Oops.

Maybe we won't make him sleep on it next time. But then again...he survived didn't he?

Unfortunately that doesn't just happen with the third child.
Remember that happened to you (maybe it was because you were one of four!)
Only the arm had a fracture & I too hoped it would just go away!
Good thing kids are really TOUGH so they can live through their parents mistakes!!

So Mom the details are a little fuzzy. I don't remember ever having a cast or a broken arm. But I do remember having my arm in a sling. Was it really broken? It happened on Huber street didn't it?

Ahh, you fell off of a slide - I don't remember where but not at home but yes Huber. You complained about it but it looked ok to me - you could wiggle your fingers so Dr. Thomas figured it wasn't broken even though it hurt!! Later that month I had one of the other kids at the doc for something & YOU told the doc that you fell off of a very high slide & you thought your arm was broken. The doc checked it out & said that it was fractured but that it was small & that they would not have cast it even if I had brought you in when it happened! They did give you a sling - more to make you feel good than for your arm I think because it slowed you down & you didn't wear it for very long - a day or two!
